CSS Selectors 101: Targeting Elements with Precision
CSS needs to know which elements to style. That's where CSS selectors come in. Selectors are like addresses that tell CSS precisely which HTML elements to target.
Think of it like telling people in a room:
"All students" (element selector)
"The kid wearing the red shirt" (class selector)
"Sarah" (ID selector)
Why CSS selectors are needed
Without selectors, CSS would be useless. You'd write:
color: blue;
But which element gets blue? The <h1>? The <p>? Everything?
Selectors solve this by saying: "Apply this style to these specific elements."
1. Element selector (the simplest)
Targets all elements of a certain type.
p {
color: blue;
}
This makes every <p> paragraph blue.

<p>First paragraph</p>
<p>Second paragraph</p>
<h1>Title</h1>
Result: Both paragraphs turn blue. The <h1> stays normal.

2. Class selector (most common)

3. ID selector (unique targeting)
Targets a single element with a specific ID.

Important: IDs should be unique (only one per page).
4. Group selectors (style multiple at once)
Target several selectors with the same styles.

5. Descendant selectors (nested targeting)
Target elements inside other elements.

When multiple selectors match the same element, CSS uses priority:
